Queen's Park are in cup business again, a week after dumping Aberdeen from the CIS Cup, against one of Billy Stark's former clubs once again. This time 1st Division St Johnstone are the opposition at McDiarmid Park, Perth in the Challenge Cup 2nd Round.
Queen's coach Billy Stark was manager of the Perth Saints for three years, eventually leaving in April 2004 before becoming manager at Hampden in August 2004. Less than six months had gone and he had brought two of his former charges with him, midfielder Mark Ferry and striker Richard Bowers.
Saints have made a decent start to their 1st Division campaign, as they strive for promotion to the SPL after finishing in second place last term. So far this season Owen Coyle's men are unbeaten, victories over East Fife, Elgin City and Raith Rovers in the cups along with wins over Ross County and Queen Of The South in the league and draws with Clyde and Hamilton.
That leaves them sitting in 4th place, four points behind league leaders and favourites Gretna. This will be the first ever meeting between the sides at their modern McDiarmid Park ground in Perth as the last time they met back in 1988, Saints were still playing at Muirton Park.
The two sides last met at Hampden Park in the old Scottish Division 2 back in the 1987/88 season. Spiders ran out 2-1 winners that day and a similiar result would be most welcomed by the Spiders faithful tomorrow night as we look to further enhance our cup success over the last month.
TEAM NEWS
Shaun Molloy (hamstring), Steven Reilly (knee) and Richard Sinclair (calf) are all doubts while Frankie Carroll, who was left out at Cliftonhill, is likely to be given a recall. Small midfielder Tommy Murray is still out with a troublesome ankle injury while some other first teamers are likely to be rested.
