33 year old Liverpool supporter Whelan, has likened Queen's situation to that of his beloved Reds, who have had a slow start to the season in the English Premiership.
Whelan has said that the excellent run in the CIS Cup experienced by Queen's in the early part of the season is to blame for Spiders' slow start in the league which sees them sitting in 8th place, 8 points behind tomorrow's visitors, East Fife who top the table.
He said on Wednesday night's 3-0 defeat to Motherwell "That was no disgrace for us and we played some decent football. The extra games have been a welcome distraction because they build confidence when you're winning."
Commenting on our opponents East Fife, the big Scouser said "They are a good, strong team and they've started really well but anybody can go on runs in this division."
"Two or three wins and it's all change, so it's too early to write off our chances in the league."
"Look at Liverpool - they've been written off already but there's still 80-odd points to play for."
