It was the battle of the two Queen's at Lesser Hampden today but neither side really performed and the 4-0 scoreline hugely flattered the Queen Of The South side who beat what was effectively a second XI.
Billy Stark missed out a few key players, experienced Mark Cairns began the game in goals. Paul Paton, Shaun Molloy, young Jamie Dailly and Stephen Reilly made up the defence with Paul Cairney, Jonny Whelan, Michael Keenan and Paul McClory in midfield. Frankie Carroll partnered a Trialist up front.
It took a while for the first opportunity and Queen's Park oblidged to miss it. Trialist blazing over from three yards after a good cross ball from the impressive Paul McClory. Neither side had any real rythm though and Doonhamers took the lead. The ball was floated to the back post from a corner kick and after one touch former Queen's Park favourite John O'Neill dispatched the ball high past Cairns into the near top corner
Also coming close for Billy Stark's side was Frankie Carroll, who lobbed a volley from a Paton cross over the keeper but the ball managed to creep by the post. QoS doubled the advantage just after half time, Thomson scoring after good work by Mullen, then with fifteen minutes left of the game the Dumfries side scored the third when a defensive error allowed Mullen to round Cairns and hammer the ball past Reilly on the line. The fourth came moments later when a simple through ball exposed the defence and the ball was slid under Cairns and into the bottom corner by Andy Thomson for his second for Doonhamers. Queen's had a chance to pull one back when the Trialist forced a great two handed save from Scott after he pulled away from experienced Jim Lauchlan after he let youngster Kennedy's pass to roll across him.
Nothing much can be read into this though, it will be time to judge this Queen's Park side after Saturday's game against Arbroath.
