CIS Cup 1st Round - Queen's Park 2 - 1 Hamilton

Queen's Park put in a spirited performance and bounced back from Saturday's league disapointment against Arbroath in the best possible way, dumping first division Hamilton Academical out of the CIS Insurance League Cup at the first round stage.

Both sides were trashed in their league openers on Saturday afternoon, Queen's went down 3-0 to The Red Lichties and Billy Reid's Accies were beaten 6-0 by Second Division Champions, Gretna.

Injuries and work commitments forced Billy Stark to shuffle his pack slightly, Mark Ferry was unavailable, while Tommy Murray was injured. Tony Quinn was nursing a knock but a warm up injury to Alan Trouten forced Big Quinno into the starting line up. Mick Dunlop was also slightly doubtful but made it into the first XI. Stephen Reilly and Paul Paton returned from suspension.

In full, David Crawford took goals with a back three of Sinclair, Reilly and Agostini. Paton and Dunlop were wing backs with Canning, Kettlewell and Quinn in midfield. Frankie Carroll and David Weatherston were up front. On the bench were two new boys, Paul Ronald and Michael Keenan along with Richard Bowers, Shaun Molloy and goalkeeper Mark Cairns.

The game started in the worst possible way in the Hampden rain, former England u-21 international Richard Offiong burst into the Queen's box and dived over the trailing leg of Agostini, he then dramatically rolled around until referee Eddie Smith pointed to the spot. DC, becoming a bit of a penalty specialist, dived to his right and parried out Fleming's spot kick and also blocked Wilson's follow up from close range.

Mark Gilhaney tried again for a spot kick as he embarrasingly dived over another Agostini challenge, acrobatically ending up four feet off the ground, the referee said that he dived, but refused to book the Accies midfielder.

This spurred Queen's on and they got the opener after only six minutes of play, a bursting run from Stuart Kettlewell ended up with him playing in Steven Canning who dinked the ball over the flailing David McEwan and into the net. Wild celebrations as Spiders took the lead over their 1st Division visitors.

Eddie Smith was infurating Queen's fans with his decisions which seemed to lean toward the "big" team, a barrage of free kicks being given to Accies. They weren't using them though and so far, other than the penalty, David Crawford hadn't been too busy.

Near the end of the half Queen's created a good chance when they played the "Ferry Corner", Fez wasn't on the park and Stephen Reilly's shooting first time from eighteen yards isn't quite his strength as it blazed high over the Accies crossbar.

Moments before half time Queen's nearly doubled their lead, and they would have, if it wasn't for a brilliant two handed save from Accies keeper David McEwan. Paton layed on Tony Quinn outside the box and he cracked it with his left foot only to see McEwan fly across his goal-line to push the shot wide.

HALF TIME: Queen's Park 1 - 0 Hamilton Accies

Queen's lined up for the second half unchanged from the hugely succesful first, and started where they left off, Frankie Carroll's chance tame shot easily caught by the alert McEwan as the ball trundled toward him. Offiong came close with a glancing header after a pinpoint cross by Fleming but Queen's rode their luck slightly as the marking had been poor and the big striker should have done better.

Their good work so far looked to have been undone when Agostini was harshly penalised for a hand ball in the box as he miscontrolled a looping ball and it bobbled up onto his arm, penalty given and this time Richard Offiong faced DC in the Spiders' goal. DC made himself big done a bit of dancing and dived low to his right and turned it outwards and Sinky gave it an almighty whack clear. Another danger cleared, but there was more to come from Spiders full time opponents.

DC was at his best and had to be flexible to prevent a long range shot from sub Agnew bursting his net, tipping over the bar and he had to dive to his left and make a fantastic two handed save to push Gilhaney's 35 yard effort round the post.

All the effort and good work was undone after 72 minutes when instead of heading the ball clear, the otherwise impeccable Reilly let it drop behind him, he thought he was under no pressure but Offiong steamrollered past Reilly and knocked him off the ball, Offiong took control and lifted the ball over the onrushing David Crawford and into the back of the net. 1-1, but the heads never sank.

Steven Canning very nearly stole the winner late on with a brilliant free kick which shaved the keeper's right hand post and Richard Bowers replaced Frankie Carroll before referee Eddie Smith blew for full time. Still thirty minutes to go though as extra time beckoned.

The remaining thirty minutes started brilliantly for Spiders as both lively sub Richie Bowers and Steven Canning worried McEwan and then Accies were down to ten men after 98 minutes. Tony Quinn crunched into a tackle with Richard Offiong and won the ball, while Quinno was on the ground the Accies forward lashed out, kicking Quinno, yards from referee Eddie Smith. He was duly sent off and showed his frustation by throwing a water bottle about 30 yards down the tunnel.

Queen's reshuffled the pack slightly returning to a more familiar 4-4-2, bringing off defender Damiano Agostini for 35 year old Paul Ronald, for his Spiders debut. He won a corner kick with his first touch but Tony Quinn's header from Steven Canning's pinpoint corner was wide of the mark.

Though seconds later Spiders scored the winner, a through ball by Paul Paton was chased in by Bowers and he used his pace to squeeze through defenders Easton and Thomson, he let the ball bounce and then lifted it over McEwan on the volley and into the net, wild celebrations on and off the park and Richard Bowers was booked for removing for his jersey. Who cares? Queen's ran out the clock, with Keenan replacing Quinno and it was victory. 2-1 Queen's.

The shock of the round definately, they were two divisions better than us according to the SFL League structure, but they were outplayed, Queen's Park were at their best, and we are in the hat for the Second Round draw.

The draw is made tomorrow morning, what's the odds on a wee cup run?
